Sneaker innovation is where technology meets footwear. The world of sneakers is one of constant innovation, full of shifting paradigms and fresh ideas. In 2021, the global sneaker market was valued at $84 billion and projected to grow to over $128 billion by 2027. One reason for this growth is the availability of sneaker technology once afforded only to elite athletes like sub-two-hour marathoner Eluid Kipchoge to every runner.

One of the most exciting innovations in sneaker technology is the use of carbon-plating. This technology, which was first introduced by Reebok in the 1990s, allows runners to harness their own energy from heel-strike to toe-off, driving their strides and improving their performance. Nike has been at the forefront of this trend, with their innovative cushioning and carbon-plated sole systems being used in shoes like the ZoomX NEXT% and the Vaporfly NEXT%. Other brands like Hoka, Adidas, and Saucony have also started using carbon plating in their shoes, promising a more propulsive, efficient, and safer ride.

Another area where sneaker technology is making a big impact is in sustainability. Brands are increasingly focused on reducing their environmental impact by using renewable materials and eco-friendly construction processes. Adidas, for example, has been using mushroom leather to make their Stan Smiths, while Nike has been using PIÑATEX pineapple leather to make their lifestyle sneakers. Other brands like New Balance are using leftover materials to make sure no scrap goes to waste.
